Having a baby is inarguably one of life's biggest events, and while children bring so much joy and happiness, the huge life changes involved can also be very challenging for new parents.

The realities of parenthood are often quite different to the expectations before and during pregnancy, and many new parents feel quite shocked by the impact that their new baby has on their world regardless of how very much they love them.

Sleep deprivation, the immense new responsibility, learning to care for a newborn, whilst also physically recovering from birth puts both parents in an emotionally vulnerable position.

While parents often are far more adapted to their new way of life after the first year, the mental and emotional challenges of parenthood are ongoing and can often bring to the surface emotional issues from the parent's past that they have not previously needed to address.

Signs of Postnatal Depression

Postnatal Depression is common, affecting about 1 in 10 women within a year of giving birth. It can develop gradually over time and so can sometimes go unrecognised. The cause of postnatal depression can be hormonal or situational and is most often a combination of the two.

Postnatal Anxiety is also very common but is spoken about and recognised less frequently. This does not mean that it is any less important to address, and women who suffer from post natal anxiety can find that it prevents them from doing many things and enjoying life with their baby. Postnatal anxiety can also be a contributing cause of postnatal depression or they can be experienced together.
